Marketing campaign for Harry Potter

Above show pictures of the posters that were released for the Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows Part 1. As you can see they released a lot of posters to make sure that they reached everyone with the campaign and also to allow the audience to see what affect the final battle has on the main characters that are in the film and also the bad guys. This was a great idea for them to do as it shows that they wanted to make sure that every character /actress/actor was shown in the final film and the final ad campaign. Each poster has the words 'IT ALL ENDS 7.15' this shows that '7.15' is the date that the film comes out in the cinema, 'IT ALL ENDS' this shows that it is the final film and they want to go out with a bang. Out of the 10 posters that are above 5 of them are the good guy, they all have dirt on their faces which shows they are in battle and are fighting to keep there side free, the other 5 are bad guys they all have clean faces which shows that they aren't in battle but could be going in to battle. The red spots on some of the poster could indicate that there is blood that is spilt in the film or even if someone gets killed.

This is the Harry Potter website, it is easy to get to as all you need to do is type in Harry Potter in a search engine and it will come up in the results. When you go onto the website it shows you the trailer for the film which is good because if people haven't seen it they can see it when they go onto the website, it allows you to skip the trailer if you have seen it which is really good. Once the trailer has gone out of the way then the screen above comes on, this is well laid out as it shows where the film is set and the characters are in front of it, this shows that they are maybe protecting it from bad guys. The text is all the same with shows that they have been consistent with the projects they produce, they have the main characters at the front this shows that it is their battle, well Harry's battle and everyone is behind him to protect what they have left. They are advertising the DVD at the top of the page which shows that they will take any chance they want to promote themselves when they want and make sure that their fans have every chance to buy the DVD's.
This is the trailer for Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows Part 1, this film was well marketed as it was shown on the television thousands of times that allows people to see it there. The trailer has it all a lot of jump cuts to show as much as they could without giving anything away and also slow clips with a voice over on them to show clips that are related to watch the voice over is saying. The trailer itself was released a few months before the  film was due out, this was to create a buzz because everyone was waiting for the final films and Warner Bros. didn't want there to be a let down when it was released, they brought out a lot of trailers with some different clips in them, and some did give away to much which was a bit of a let down. You-tube changed the back ground on their site to Harry Potter for that day to promote the film, a newspaper had a special Harry Potter booklet inside it for free when people bought the paper.

Claude Levi Strauss

  • Argued that meaning in narrative is based upon binary oppositions:
    • He was less interested in the arguement of narrative and more in the deeper meaning of themes.
Binary Oppisites:
  • Man vs Women
  • Earth vs Space
  • Good vs Evil
  • Science vs Nature

Bauarillard

  • This theorist stated that the gulf war never happened in a reaction to the postmondern world.
  • This mean that the 'reality' of the war we experienced through the media bore very little reality to the orginal: the war itself.
  • It was simulation in our own cultral context we put our own individual spin on things.

Postmodenernist Theory

  • Diliberately rejects the idea that there are highs and low culture.
  • They tend to avoid rigid genre distinctions.
  • Rather than conforming to genre distinctions, postmodernist took a preference of the following formats:
    • Pastiche: A mixture of different forms.
    • Prorody: A spoof version of genre
    • Bricolage: Use of material avaliable despite the intended purpose.
    • Irony: When there is tension between what is siad and what is meant.

  • Very important concepts in postmodernism.
  • Intertextuality is the way that one text may make use of another to add further.

Queer Theory

Section A:  Queer theory is a field of gender studies that emerged in the early 1990's out the fields of guy and lesbian studies and feminist studies.
  • Although many people believe in that queer theory is only about homosexual representation in literature, it also explodes.
  • It is not only concerned with sexuality but also with idenity.
  • It sees gender as constructed socially, to some extent through our association with the media.
Fred in scooby doo is american, 70's, groomed, muscular.
thelma - brainy
dalphne - girly girl, make up, feminie.

  • The hetrosexual: queer theorist analysis texts to expose undertying meanings within and to challange the notions of 'straight' ideology.
  • They generally challenage the idea that what appears to be straight is in fact a subversion of true homosexual desires.

Vladimir Propp

Vladimir Propp: 8 Character roles or spheres or actions.
  • 31 functions all highly predictable such as the villian being punished the end of the story.

Spheres and actions:
  • Hero
  • Heroin
  • Villian
  • Main character
  • Her father
  • Prince/Princess
  • Helper
  • Donor
  • False Hero
  • Disputer

Poster

Website
 Trailer

The synergy is really good between the poster, website and the trailer. They are very consistent with the text that they have on the items that they produce in order to promote their films. They have kept with the same house style so that people know that it is the sam film and the same comapany that they are doing the promotion of the film. The actors that are in the the film promote it all by itself Johnny Depp is a well know Actor doing a wide rang of films in his career and also people love to go and see the films that are made by Tim Burton as people dont know what he will come up with next but they are always shocked in a good way. Having the same colour scheme, text, font and pictures shows that the company have thought carefully how they want to market the film and also how they can make sure that if people see the next poster that has been released they will
notice that the text, colour scheme and picture(type) is the same as on the other posters straight away with knowing what film it is.

Narrative

Tzventan Todorov: Equilibrium: The normal (norm) state at the begining of the next. Any opposing forces are in balance.

Roland Barthes: Barthes is famous in media studies for suggesting that narratives work with five codes.
  • Action of proairetic
  • The engima or Hermeneutic -not explained
  • The semic
  • The symbolic
  • The cultural or referential
The engima code is the most famous as we use this to make quesses as to how the narrative will finish, therefore providing pleasure for the audience.

The hermeneutic code: Parts are not fully explained. The exsist as engimas or questions that audience wishes to resolve. A criminal act is shown and the reminder of the narrative is devoted to answering questions raised by thte intial event. Final truth not unitl the end, not giving ending away but getting people to ask questions.

The snare: Tease to send audience down wrong path.

Partial answers: Revealing some of the final truth.

Equivocation: Mixture of truth ans snare.

Jamming: Suggesting that the problem may be unsolvable.

The proairetic code: Character arguement makes audience wonder why and how it can be resolved, suspence and tension.

Poster analysis of: Friday 13th & Fright Night

These film posters are representing the Horror genre which is the chosen genre of mine and Andrew Kellers film trailer that we have chosen to do. The film posters above say alot about the films that they are representing, such as in the fright night trailer (right) it shows the setting of the film which is the house and that the people in it are going to get fright in the night time, the colour scheme is good as it makes it look worst rather than it would if it was done in day light with the sun shining down. Friday the 13th film poster (left) shows again the setting of the film and people know that people have bad luck on friday the 13th so it was a great name for a film and also it came out on friday the 13th. The background is dark and dull which shows its not a happy film and that there is someone who is going to be going after the people in the film and that it will be scary and full of bad luck that will scare people when the day comes.

Film poster analysis

The harry potter campaign posters feature each character at the final battle with all of their scars and wounds once the battle has begun. They show the power of the film and what questions people ask when they see them. The first poster to come out was one of harry himself with showing the scar on his head and as i have said all of the wounds and scratches of the battle that he is facing with the dark lord.
The poster shows synergy by promoting the actor which is Daniel Radcliffe and he is famously known for harry potter and the poster also shows the date that the film comes out which is the 7.15 which is the 15th of July 2011, which is what the harry potter franchise has been building up to.
I know that the trailer and the poster are linked because it has the same actors on it and the date it the same for the release and also it shows that the film will be in IMAX 3D which is also says in the trailer.

Film Magazine Front Cover Analysis

Also the date and price is hard to read because of the picture on the front, and most people want to know how much the magazine is before they buy it, this doesn't allow this.

Mean Girls trailer Analysis

This trailers shows how changing the way the clips are put and the music that is added to it that i can become a completely different traillers for example the mean girls (Horror Trailer) suggests that Katy played by Lindsey Lohan is that mean girl as they put clips from the film of her going after a boy and not getting what she wants. If people who havent seen the film watch this trailer they would be confused if they watched to film as they would find that its not about Katy being a mean girl its about Regina George who is one of the popular plastic girls making katys life a living hell.
The real mean girls trailer shows the real story and girl who goes to a public school for the first time and trys to fit in with the kids there and soon learns that people dont like new people, Katy get welcomed into a group of 2, a girl and a boy they tell her what the school is like and where certain people go and the rules of not to talk to people you dont know and most of them just dont want to know. Katy soon gets welcomed into the Plastics and trys to ruin the main girls life by making her eat bars so that she will become fat and get used by both of them and gets up alone .

Its good how the person who made the horror verson did they way they did it, it completely changes the story and that is all that needs doing to take a comedy to a horror, music and clips makes all the different.

Harry Potter Trailer analysis

The harry potter trailer that i was told to watch was for the finale of the harry potter series. The potter films have been in going for 10 years and we have seen many explosions and struggles that the 3 main characters go through to fight the Dark Lord. These films are epic and are always guaranteed to be noticed by the whole world. The film is made in the UK and only has UK actors and actresses in as this was part of the film deal that was signed by the book author J.K Rowling.
The trailer itself shows the intensity of the film in less then 2 minutes and makes the audience think about it for hours and hours wondering what is going to happen and wanting to find out. The music in the trailer is the classic harry potter music which is noticed by thousands all over the world therefore it cannot be copy righted and cannot be un-noticed.
In the trailer they use several jump cuts which go back through the past films to show what it has all lead up to and what it all comes down to in the show down.
The narration near the beginning was the Dark lord this shows what he has planned for the last film and what he has been leading up to and what he wants.
The trailer shows snap shots of the film without giving anything away which is brilliant and makes the audience question what will happen.

Close ups are very often in this clip as it gives the effect to the audience that the people shown are driven to do something and are very powerful in doing so. There are a lot of long shots to show the surroundings and what is going on around the main characters this is to show that they are not the only ones fighting and not the only part that is having an effect on the audience.

There there are several titles shown in the harry potter the deathly hallows part 2 video as it is telling part of the story and what the outcome will be when the film franchise comes to an end.

Comparing new & old films

The above trailer shows how technology has changed and how people react to trailers and what resources that they have. The trailer Dr. strangelove shows how simple and easy it was to make a trailer, although it must have been annoying to have to put on word on the screen at a time, where as now you can put as much as you want and how big you want it to be. The film trailer is in black and white which isnt used a great deal these day only for films that have been remaded and even then it shows how it has changed by comparing the two.
This trailer is Wall Street Money Never Sleeps, it is a more up to date trailer and it longer than the Dr. strange love trailer, this trailer has longer clips of relevent parts of the film to show the love that is in it and what is has the effect on and when the film is watched people will know why. There are a lot of long clips in this trailer that have transitions with sounds affect on the in the middle of the clips, this is good because it is building up suspense as it gets to the faster clips. This film was a remake the original was made in 1987 and also had Michael Douglas, the 2010 trailer is so advanced it shows transitions, where as the 1987 trailer only goes from clip to clip without anything in the middle, also the clip and the beginning is burly and  along with the text at the end, it was hard to get words on the screen, they weren't able to choose from a lot of font options they had maybe three options and the primary colours.
